The National Gallery of Victoria is a must-see when visiting Melbourne, located on St Kilda Rd just across the river from Federation Square. Its water feature out the front of the building is emblematic of the beauty that is within. There are always spectacular and interesting limited-time exhibitions on that you can pay to enter. The free permanent collection, however, is just as incredible and is definitely worth a visit.

The Ian Potter Gallery, which is located in Federation Square across from another iconic Melbourne building, Flinders Street Station. It is the first major gallery to exclusively feature Australian art, presenting art from Colonial period through to the present. It also has a suite of galleries dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.

Theatre

Melbourne has a rich history of theatre-going and so there are always shows being performed across the wide array of theatres around Melbourne. If you’re staying close to the University of Melbourne, La Mama theatre is located nearby in Carlton. Known for its contemporary and cutting-edge approach to theatre, you can be guaranteed that whatever they have on will be unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Her Majesty’s Theatre is also always host to the big-ticket musicals, operas, ballets and plays that come to Melbourne. It’s a spectacular theatre and anything it hosts is bound to be breath-taking.

To experience a bit of history while also being entertained, The Athenaueum is the place to be. Founded in 1839, it is one of the oldest public institutions in Victoria. Currently, it is host to a range of theatre, comedy and music performances, so whatever you’re in the mood for you’re likely to find it here.

Day Trips

Getting out of Melbourne to the surrounding areas can also be a great way to spend your time with endless things to do and see:

  • Phillip Island, which is only 90 minutes away from Melbourne, is home to the Fairy Penguin Parade as well as some stunning beaches.
  • The Yarra Valley is known for its beautiful wineries so why not take a tour or go for some tastings? There are also several beautiful walks and trails in the area to take advantage of.
  • The Heritage Listed Great Ocean Road is a spectacular place to soak up the Victorian scenery, whether you go for a hike in the wilderness, embark on a cycling trail or make the most of the world-renowned beaches and go surfing.
